"When Duty Becomes Desire"

WHEN  DUTY  BECOMES  DESIRE

We do have duties.  Some things we have to do. Things that are expected.  Laws of God that we must accept. Manmade laws that are in force. Obedience is a virtue. Responsibility is a must.  Winston Churchill said that responsibility is the price of greatness.

We must obey the rules. No argument here.  But there is one thing that, in my mind, transcends mere duty. Desire.  It is one thing to follow the rules, but it is an even higher plain of existence when we can come to the point where it is our desire to do so. When we come to understand that the rules are for us and not against us, we can obey with joy and not with resentment.

Obeying the laws of God and man is a noble thing.  Wanting to is more noble. When duty becomes desire - that's the most noble of all. When you are ordered to walk the first mile - walk it.  When you walk the second mile - enjoy it!  Both miles will be easier. Character is being built!                                                                            - Tom Butterfield
