Thoughts on nature and the Christian faith - 1/28/19
"While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and
heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease." - Gen. 8:22
A slight overnight snowfall provided this small stream with a new beauty it lacked before and gave me another excuse to photograph. Winter is dreaded by many and looked forward to by a few. As for me, I love the change the different seasons provide. Seasonal change, like so many other things, becomes something we take for granted, something that no longer inspires the awe in our hearts it once did. The truth is that the planet we inhabit is unique in the universe. The slight 23 1/2 degree tilt of the earth gives us the seasons other planets lack, the abundance of water in liquid form sustains all life, the size of the earth and its proximity to the sun keeps us from either freezing or burning up. And the most unique thing of all is the vast array of life, including intelligent life that is spread throughout our world. We live on a planet of wonders. The intricacies and design of creation almost defies explanation. Almost, that is, unless we find the explanation in the invisible hand of God. The perplexity of nature demands an intelligent Designer. And the universality of evil begs for a Savior. We have degenerated as a culture to such an extent that we have come to believe that everything has occurred by chance and that we are all, at our core, basically good. But all of nature screams otherwise. All of what we see and experience around us every day demands a Creator, and all that we see within ourselves, if we are honest, demands a resolution of our guilt. We walk every day through a world of seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night. Only a fool would deny a Power behind it all. And only a fool would fail to bow both in worship and in repentance. - John
