Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
- Ps. 95:6

   I took this image not long after I photographed two younger bucks chasing females and fighting for dominance. But things changed when this fellow appeared on the scene. The boss had arrived and everyone knew it. No one was challenging, no one was even approaching, every deer in the field was showing submission. When superior power and majesty showed up everyone else knew their proper place. I have thought about this a lot recently. When we gather together to worship, God is with us. Vastly superior power and majesty is present. And how do we act? Too often we act as if we, or those who stand before us, are the center. We draw attention to what we do, what programs we have devised, or what kind of feelings we can manufacture. Where is the sense of sinners in the presence of holiness? Where is confession? Where is repentance? If we would truly know the One in whose presence we gather, we all would be on our knees. The church today, I believe, suffers from three deficiencies. We don't know God (his holiness and sovereignty), we don't know ourselves (the extent of our sinfulness), and we don't know the gospel (what Jesus actually accomplished on our behalf). If we did, our worship times would change dramatically. Being in the presence of God is both a tremendous honor as well as a tremendous responsibility. There is a time to stop acting like who we are and what we do is what is important. Even the deer that I photographed in this field knew how to act in the presence of one who was obviously superior. God does not owe us anything. We owe him everything. Let's start acting like it.  -  John
