"I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you."
-  Ps. 119:11

I was sitting in my photography blind on our property hoping to see some wild turkeys or deer when this little fellow showed up. We have several grey squirrels who live in the woods around our home, so seeing one near my blind came as no surprise. What perplexed me at first was what this one was doing, going from place to place digging in the dirt. Then I realized what I was seeing. Squirrels spend much of their time each autumn storing up enough food to last them through the winter. They gather nuts and seeds and bury them in various places in the ground or in cavities in the trees. This becomes their food supply throughout the winter and into the early spring. How they can remember the hundreds of locations where they hide their food is amazing to me. But that is what this squirrel was doing, going from location to location digging up the food he had stored away the previous autumn. It's good to store away provisions for later use. And that is exactly what scripture implores us to do. Careful study of scripture seems to be lacking in churches today, but what we store up in our minds can be used throughout the rest of our lives. I can't count the many times I have recalled a particular scripture I needed that got me through a trying time in my life. Scripture really is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Make the study of scripture a part of your day. Make it something you store up in your heart. If you do, you will find it to be the nourishment you need when everything you thought you needed falls away. Dig it up when you are hungry. But remember, you can't feed on something you have neglected to store up.  -  John
