| | I found this moth hiding in the shadows and moved it into the light for this image. This particular moth is called an underwing moth and is fairly common in the wooded areas of Ohio. When in flight, there is a colorful orange-striped marking exposed under the outer wings of this moth. At rest, when the outer wings are folded, the bright underwings are covered. In this way, these moths are perfectly camouflaged as they spend their days resting on the shaded portions of hardwood trees. Moths tend to be most active at night, then blend in with their surroundings during the day. Many so-called Christians act the same way. They are most active in the darkness, then try to blend in when they are in the light. We all were once children of darkness before we were brought into the light, and we must never forget the darkness that once characterized us or the light that now covers us. But the temptation is to slip back into the darkness at times, hoping that no one will see us there, and then to return to the light and attempt to blend in and pretend to be what we know we are not. That is the battle. Will we choose darkness or light? Scripture calls this a choice between darkness or light, flesh or spirit, the old man or the new man, the old master or the new master. We don't have the option of receiving Jesus as Savior but not as Lord. We are saved by the work of Christ alone, but we prove we are saved by walking in the light. What Jesus has done for us is both perfect and finished, but sadly what we do is imperfect and unfinished. We rest in what he has done, not in what we do. But, even though we often fail, our hearts and our efforts must strive for light, not darkness. We are not moths. - John | |
