Lindy Point is a rock formation overlooking the Blackwater Canyon in the mountains of West Virginia. A short walk through dense vegetation will end at this breath-taking location some 3000 feet above the valley below. Once when Jo and I were there, we actually saw a jet plane flying below us as it flew over the river in the valley. In other words, you certainly are elevated when you are here. The rock formation here reminds me of an ancient fortress, an impenetrable shield against attack from below and a refuge for all who take shelter near it. As Christians walking through the dark valleys of this world, it is comforting to raise our eyes to our Lord who is the rock of our salvation and who oversees the course of our lives as well as the course of all history. The one who has elected to draw us into his family is not a mere vapor or figment of our imaginations, but a mighty rock which cannot be moved by any of the assaults of any of his many enemies. He will remain standing when all else has eroded away. We can build our hopes and our futures on either shifting sand or solid rock. Most of what we see and most of what occupies our time will eventually pass away and vanish in the wind. How foolish it is to trust in the temporary when what is eternal is offered. So, when life in the valley assaults you, do what the old hymn tells us to do.
O then to the Rock let me fly,
To the Rock that is higher than I.
You have a refuge, a shield, a fortress, and a deliverer. Rest in him. - John
