I don't know about you, but I think squirrels are cute even though they sometimes drive me crazy with the ways they devise to steal the seeds from our bird feeders. I watched this little fellow as he scoured the ground for anything to eat. And then, as they often do, he stood upright and stared intently ahead looking for any signs of danger. Squirrels can maintain this posture for quite a long time. For small mammals like squirrels, it pays to always be alert, to look intently in all directions, to constantly be aware of the possibility of danger. For humans, however, we tend to look just to ourselves. If we ever do become aware of danger, we think we can overcome it ourselves. Even as Christians, when we do look to the Lord we get impatient if our perceived needs aren't met immediately. We could learn a lot from squirrels. We should be looking to the Lord constantly and waiting for answers to our questions to be given in God's own time. But we really aren't too good at waiting, are we? How arrogant it is for creatures to dictate to their Creator, for the blind to question the only One who has sight. I plead quilty to these charges. And that is why I value, in fact I need, the lessons nature can give. When I see the majesty of the mountains, the intricacies and varieties of all life, and the order and structure of what God has created, I am brought to my knees. It is then that I desire to look to him, to trust in his answers, and to wait on his timing. Sometimes what I need to be reminded of may very well come to me by means of a squirrel. The message we need is really very simple: look and wait. - John
