"I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge
in the day of my distress." - Ps. 59:16
There is something magical, even mystical, about the early dawn as it begins to illuminate the rising mist from the waters and from the surrounding hills of a remote mountain lake. When I first arrived at this location, the heavy fog and dim lighting made it impossible to see the trees on the far side of the lake. Then, ever so slowly, forms and colors emerged and created an other-worldly landscape. What I saw forming before me seemed more like an abstract painting than actual reality. My heart yearned to sing, but I couldn't find words that would express what I was feeling. Art was being created before me and I did not want to disturb the Artist. When the mist on the water and the fog in the valley eventually evaporated, true colors and distinct shapes appeared. Then the show was over. It has been over a year since I lost both my wife and my son and I honestly wondered if I could make it this far, but the Lord has walked me through this thus far and, with the help of my two amazing daughters, I know we will survive. It is hard to explain, but every time the burden seems unbearable, God makes his presence known to me. That is what happened on the morning I took this image. In my mind, I have always known He is near, but what continues to amaze me are the times when I can actually feel His presence. When I first arrived at this lake in the darkness I was certain that no one else was anywhere near. But I was wrong. I don't know why, but God seems to show glimpses of himself to me at the edges of the day. You might want to find an isolated spot yourself and go there alone at dawn or dusk and see what happens. - John
