Deer Wear Antlers for Their Crown

Thoughts on nature and the Christian faith

"Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will
award to me on that day, and not only to me but also
to all who have loved his appearing."  -  II Tim. 4:8
Kings wear crowns to show their position and their superiority over common folk. Deer wear antlers for their crowns, and this fellow surely has a magnificent crown. I was concealed in some brush at the edge of a field when I first saw this guy several hundred yards away. At first I thought he had something entangled on his antlers, but as he came closer I saw it was the most unusual and striking set of antlers I have ever seen. Those numerous tines were sprouting out everywhere in all directions. When he got within range of my telephoto lens, I made a slight kissing sound and he turned his gaze toward me and allowed me to get a few shots of him. I hope he makes it through the hunting season, because next year his crown of antlers will be even bigger. In our society we seldom see people with crowns unless they have just won some sort of contest or reached a certain level of achievement. But for Christians, we are promised a crown when Jesus returns, and it will be a crown that we did not earn or really deserve. It will be a crown of righteousness given to people like us who have no innate righteousness of our own. The only righteousness we can claim is the righteousness of another that will be credited to those of us who have put our trust in him. To have the righteousness of Christ as our crown is the only way a sinful man or woman can stand before a holy God. This buck has an awesome crown of antlers. but his crown will seem like nothing compared to the crown we one day will wear. It is enough to make even this buck jealous.  -  John
